The 17th Meeting of the Sino-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade was held in Washington DC, Capital of the USA, on April 11. Wu Yi, Vice Premier of the State Council, US Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez and US Trade Representative Rob Portman presided together the Joint Commission, US Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns attended the Meeting. The two parties sincerely and deeply exchanged views on many issues of trade and economy, and came to a series of consensus. The Meeting made great achievements.
The two parties agreed to establish a Sino-US Working Group on Hi-tech and Strategic Trade aiming at promotion of bilateral hi-tech trade under the framework of Sino-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade, to maintain informal dialogue on steel, and to start up and enhance cooperation mechanism of IPR protection to further strengthen tourism cooperation. Besides, they reached consensus on resuming import of US beef with conditions attached and US promotion to rescind the ban on import of Chinese cooked poultry.
Wu Yi said that trade and economic relations were the important part of Sino-US relations. The Meeting presented the spirit of "mutual benefit, development and win-win", and the fine wishes to properly settle issues through equal-footed consultation and to push forward the steady development of Sino-US trade and economic relations through intensified cooperation, and was a success. She said that the rapid development of Sino-US trade and economic relations completely proved that the bilateral trade and economic cooperation was mutually beneficial and win-win, and the two countries had extensive common interests in area of trade and economy. To develop Sino-US trade and economic relations was in line with the essential interests of China and the USA and people of the two countries.
Regarding to US deficit in trade with China, Wu Yi said that China highly stressed and endeavored to promote the balanced development of Sino-US trade, but it required mutual efforts of both China and the US to solve the problem of unbalanced bilateral trade. Chinese market was open, and the US administration relaxed its export control against China, which would be beneficial to reduce the trade deficit and realize balance of bilateral trade. When talking about IPR protection, Wu Yi said that China attached much importance to IPR protection, took a series of effective measures and made remarkable progress, she said, IPR protection was a common issue faced by many countries, and was required to enhance international cooperation, communicate and respond together to it. Meanwhile, Wu Yi made clear China's position on its market economy status and enhancement of Sino-US tourism cooperation.
The US Party said that Sino-US trade and economic relations was an important relation of trade and economy in the world, the Sino-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade was an important platform and negotiation mechanism for bilateral trade and economic relations. At the meeting, the two sides held a constructive and free discussion on issues of trade and economy concerned about by each other and achieved huge success, which was in favor of pushing forward the fair, sustainable and balanced development of Sino-US trade and economic relations. The US party said that it would strengthen and promote bilateral hi-tech trade under the mechanism of Joint Commission, push forward the work of the group for market economy status and expand exchanges of tourism between the two countries. With the mutual efforts, China and the US set up a sincere and credible relationship of trade and economy and it would make active progresses step by step.
After the Meeting, Wu Yi, Carlos Gutierrez, Rob Portman and US Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns met with reporters together and attended the signing ceremony of Agreements between departments and enterprises of the two countries on animal and plant quarantine, working group on Sino-US hi-tech and strategic trade and trade of Boeing airplanes and Motorola products.
