At the invitation of the US Department of Commerce, Vice Minister of Commerce Liao Xiaoqi led the Chinese government economic and trade delegation visiting the US from March 28 to 31, during which the new US Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez met with Mr. Liao and his delegation.
Mr. Carlos Gutierrez expressed his satisfaction with the positive achievements in the smooth development of Sino-US economic and trade relations in recent years and emphasized his great attention to China and to the positive role of the Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) in promoting the progress of the bilateral relations. Mr. Gutierrez showed his willingness to closely cooperate with the Chinese side in order to further the cooperative partnership in the economic and trade field.
Mr. Liao Xiaoqi said that the economic and trade relationship was a significant part and foundation of the bilateral ties between China and the US, China thus attached great importance to developing this relationship and was always ready to strengthen the cooperation and consultation with the US under the mechanism of the JCCT. Vice Minister Liao conveyed the regards of Minister Bo Xilai and his invitation to Secretary Gutierrez to visit China at his convenience.
Mr. Liao also hold candid and fruitful talks with Grant Aldonas, under Secretary of the US Department of Commerce, and Josette Sheeran Shiner, Deputy US Trade Representative, on issues concerning Sino-US relations at large and the preparation efforts for the 16th JCCT meeting in specific. The two sides reached consensus on many issues. In addition, the Chinese delegation headed by Mr. Liao and the US delegation headed by Under Secretary of Commerce Cooper under the Trade Statistics Working Group of the JCCT held the second session of the Working Group, which was ended with encouraging results.
